Bamboo Knife

A bamboo cutter used on a cutting cushion (kiban) for cutting gold leaf and other metal leaves. This is a two-handled type. Also used to make kirihaku (small square “ko-ishi”), noge (filaments), and tanzaku (strips). Applications: gilding, leaf work, aka-utsushi (transfer-leaf technique), crafts, and Nihonga (Japanese painting).
