Should a protective agent or coating be applied to the surface after attaching the gold leaf?
Preserving the beautifully gilded gold leaf. It's something everyone thinks about, right? The main point to convey is that applying a protective agent or coatings will alter the appearance of the gold leaf. Because a thin layer of film is applied, it slightly suppresses the shine of the metal. Depending on whether it is an indoor decoration, a touchable surface, an outdoor application, etc., the choice of protective agent or coatings varies. 'Protect' is our water-based protective agent developed for indoor crafts and paintings. While it can create a thin film on the surface, scratching with a fingernail or similar actions can cause the leaf to peel off as well. For items that are used daily or touched frequently, applying a commercially available urethane clear coat will provide solid protection.

Regarding gold gilding on wooden doors with a glossy surface finish - can it be done on smooth surfaces with a glossy finish as well using the Kutsuki Max?
If the surface has been processed, it will repel water-based Kutsuki MAX. Let's grind the surface with sandpaper to return it to its base. After sanding (removing the surface treatment), apply Kutsuki MAX. If it seems to be absorbed, apply a primer to prevent absorption before applying the gold gilding glue. It is fine to use other products such as polyester surfacer or urethane paint for the primer treatment.

The shining gold powder in lacquerware works is called "HIrame gold powder" and "Marufun gold powder," and is completely different from Kindei/Keshi gold powder that is used for painting.
